Kitty’s 3 Peaks Challenge for charity

Soon I will be taking on the National 3 Peaks Challenge in under 24 hours with my family. We’re hoping to open the conversation about suicide and men’s mental health, whilst also raising money for two great organisations. Keep reading to find out more about our story and how you can support.

Our story

One year ago I sadly lost my cousin to suicide.

On 1st June at 5pm, I will be starting the National 3 Peaks in under 24 hours challenge along with my boyfriend Owen and brother Finn. This challenge will consist of climbing the biggest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales and travelling between them, all within 24 hours. Starting at Ben Nevis, we will then continue to Scafell Pike and finish at Snowdon where we will be joined by friends and family for the final peak.

Losing my cousin has had a massive impact on our family. We always had fun with him when we were together, which has made us realise the importance of talking and men’s mental health. We are completing this challenge in his memory as we want to encourage people to know it’s okay not to be okay but to talk about how they’re feeling.

We are raising money for ANDYSMANCLUB and Men’s Minds Matter to support all stages of suicide prevention. We will be splitting all money raised equally between these two organisations.

ANDYSMANCLUB is a men’s suicide prevention charity, offering free-to-attend peer-to-peer support groups across the United Kingdom and online. They want to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health and help men through the power of conversation. #ITSOKAYTOTALK

Men’s Minds Matter is a not-for-profit organisation that specialises in suicide prevention and intervention. They are a leading voice in suicide prevention, male suicide and male psychology in the UK and actively campaign to raise awareness of suicide in men.

Our first practice at Cross Fell

If this were the only experience I had before taking on the challenge, it is safe to say I would be cancelling. This one wasn’t much fun – cold, wet, windy and not a soul in sight! Pretty eery.

Roseberry Topping x3

Our favourite local climb, except we decided to do it not once, not twice but three times (almost) back to back. We got some funny looks when we past people multiple times!

Helvellyn on Good Friday

My favourite hike so far! A splash of rain on our way up, snow at the top and glorious sunshine on the way down. The views were spectacular too. Unfortunately we were in a car crash on our way home so had to take a break from training.

Sunrise steps

Up at 4am with my sprained ankle all strapped up and jumping straight in the car, we were at the top of Roseberry topping not long later to watch the sunrise. Such a peaceful hike.

Blencathra

This was our first “expert” hike and it was a tough one. It involved a bit of scrambling and we bumped into some very cute lambs too.

The Calf by Sedbergh

This was our first test in the heat as the sun was blazing! Thankfully we passed the test with flying colours as we knocked 45mins off the predicted time – something we need to be doing at every peak on the day.

Scafell Pike – 2 weeks to go

This will be a practice run before the real thing, can we do it in 4 hours? (The predicted time is 4h 52m…) We’ve heard this is the hardest because it is so steep.

Let the challenge commence!

We will be starting Ben Nevis at 5pm and hopefully finishing the final peak 24 hours later. Wish us luck!
