In 2019, just over 37 million people visited the UK from all over the world. Although many of these people spoke English as a second language, many of them did not. Businesses without multilingual websites or materials lose potential customers if they do not cater to them in their native tongue.

Put your name on the map for international tourists
At LEaF, we’re passionate about language and travel, and we’re experts in translation – we know just how important high-quality and effective translations are for the tourism industry. British tourists often expect to find an English translation of information and menus in hotels and restaurants abroad, but what about when our foreign friends visit us from other countries? How much of the information provided for tourists is available in French, Spanish, German, Italian and so on?
Speaking to international tourists in their own language is a fantastic way to convince them that your hotel, your restaurant or your tourist attraction is the best option for them – that you care about their needs and that they will be welcomed with open arms.
With years of experience within the translation industry, we know how tempting it can be to use free apps and machine translation services like Google Translate. Sadly, the translations provided by these free services are incorrect at best and misleading at worst. Bad translations look unprofessional, can confuse potential customers and can often do more harm to your brand than good.
As a small York-based translation business, we operate lean and flexible services to ensure the best and most competitive prices. What’s more, as well as offering expert translators, we also offer SEO expertise for website translations, which means we can help boost your performances in local searches, so that you can make the most of every opportunity.

LEaF Translations – a proud member of Visit York
Here at LEaF Translations, we are very proud to be based in York – a stunning city famous for its Roman walls, medieval streets, Viking connections and its hugely impressive cathedral, York Minster.
We are extremely passionate about our hometown – so passionate, in fact, that we are on a mission to help some fabulous local businesses reach out to new international markets. In short, we want York’s great hotels to be fully booked and for York’s other businesses to enjoy a roaring trade with non-English speakers.
People search Google in their native language.
Does your website show up?
Aside from making a good impression to potential customers and helping them to enjoy their stay or their visit to the full, there is another key reason to have your website translated: international SEO.
When we search online, we search in English. As such, the websites that Google displays in the search results are also in English. But what about when a German tourist looks for accommodation in York online? You’ve guessed it, they will search in German. If you have not translated your website, it will not contain the German word for accommodation – “Unterkunft” – and your website won’t show up. Google will present them with a list of websites containing their German search term – in other words, a list of websites that have been translated into German. Simply put, if you want to attract French or German or Spanish tourists, you need a French, German or Spanish website.
And Google search results are not the only factor to consider here: studies show that people pay more attention to websites and materials that are written in their native language when abroad. Only around 50% of those surveyed pay the same amount of attention if the information is written in another language. So, if you want to make an impression on your international guests, providing information in their language should be one of your key priorities.

Case study: website translation for the boutique VILLINO hotel
In 2020, we worked together with the Berlin-based advertising agency Männer & Müller to provide a full website translation for the VILLINO – a stunning boutique hotel, complete with Michelin-star restaurant, set high above Lake Constance. While Männer & Müller focused on the website redesign, we focused on our area of expertise: German to English translations.
The result: a fantastic new English-language website showcasing the very best side of the VILLINO and making it look simply irresistible to English-speaking tourists – so irresistible in fact, we are desperate to go there ourselves!
Would definitely recommend: LEaF are fast, friendly and proactive!Mona Breulmann, Männer & Müller
